How to Design Your Own Patch: A Complete Guide

Designing a patch is different from designing for print. Embroidery is thread on fabric — follow these rules and your patch will come out looking exactly like the design.

1. Start with a clean file

Vector files (SVG, AI, PDF) are best — they scale to any size without losing detail. If you only have a raster image, send the largest version you have: 500px or more on the short side. A 100×100px screenshot will not digitize into crisp edges. Our quote tool flags low-resolution uploads automatically.

2. Limit your colors

Aim for 8 or fewer thread colors — flat, solid colors. Gradients, drop shadows and photo shading don't translate to thread. If your artwork is photo-style, simplify it to flat color areas before submitting. (Full thread-color guide here.)

3. Design with a border in mind

Almost every patch gets a stitched edge border. Leave a little breathing room between your artwork and the patch edge — content touching the border looks cramped. A colored border (often black, but contrast colors look great too) frames the design and protects the edge from fraying.

4. Keep text bold

Thread is thicker than ink. Serif fonts and ultra-thin lines blur or drop out once stitched. Use bold, blocky lettering and keep the smallest text at least a quarter-inch tall on the final patch.

5. Check your design before you pay

Upload your artwork to our custom patch builder and the design checker will tell you — instantly and free — whether the color count, resolution and detail level will stitch cleanly. No surprises after you order.
