Iron-on vs Sew-on Patches: Which Backing Should You Choose?

Every patch we make can be finished with any backing. Here is how to pick the right one — and what each costs.

The three backings at a glance

Sew-onStitched around the edgeJackets, vests, heavy fabricNo surcharge

Iron-on patches

Iron-on patches have a heat-activated adhesive on the back. Apply with a hot iron for 10–15 seconds under firm pressure and they bond to cotton and most natural fabrics. They're the easiest option for beginners and perfect for t-shirts, denim jackets and caps. The one trade-off: over many hot washes, the adhesive can weaken — ironing inside out on low heat extends the life significantly.

Sew-on patches

Sew-on patches are stitched around the border and are the most durable choice by far. They survive washing, bending, and decades of wear — which is why bikers and collectors always sew their patches onto leather vests and jackets. If you're not handy with a needle, any local tailor can attach one in minutes.

Velcro (hook & loop) patches

Velcro patches attach to a matching loop field on your garment or bag. They're standard on military and tactical gear, work uniforms, and anywhere patches need to be swapped, washed separately, or removed. Expect a small surcharge (about $0.50 per patch) for the hook-and-loop backing.

The professional trick: iron-on + a stitch

Many customers iron the patch on, then add a quick stitch around the edge. You get the easy positioning of iron-on with the durability of sew-on — the best of both worlds.
